Working for Purity

The Environment

Which sustains both living and non-living things, but the burden of satisfying human needs more often than not creates chemical imbalances in both biological and physical parameters adversely affecting the surroundings.
If chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) waste was the primary reason for depletion of the ozone layer leading to global warming, it's now the turn of e-waste with tons of obsolete computers and peripherals putting undue load on conventional methods of recycling.
Low-lying island countries in the Pacific Ocean have uncertain futures with rising water levels due to global warming threatening to cause disasters. Greenhouse gas emissions can be controlled, and the world is turning towards industrialised nations to restore balance by introducing even more stringent environmental pollution controls.

Affects of Solid Waste on Climate

Solid Waste has a direct affect on climate. Green House Gases, (GHG), which is amongst many other types of gases, contain by Earth’s atmosphere, absorbs and retains heat from Sun. They regulate the Earth’s climate by holding a warmth atmospheric blanket around the planet’s surface. This phenomenon is also known as “Green House Effect”. Without GHG, the average temperature on Earth would be -2 °F, instead of the current 57°F. Certain human activities (manufacturing, distribution and use of products, including waste generation) result in omission of additional GHG, which upsets the natural atmospheric balance, resulting in direct increase in global temperature. Solid Waste affects climate change through landfill methane emission. The source of manmade methane gas is from the landfills themselves, which happens when organic waste is left to decay anaerobically.

Controlling Environmental Pollution

Economic policies are geared towards achieving common good; however, limited resources at grass-root levels make implementation a rather difficult task. Affected people often try to establish a balance between following guidelines and sustaining quality of life within their homes.
Conscious effort is made to curb vehicular pollution with regulatory bodies and manufacturers working hand-in-hand to stop emission of toxic gases. CFCs are on the way out, but estimates suggest it may take years before polluting effects on the atmosphere can be really controlled.

Water Pollution Containment

Faulty sewage leaks and chemical pollutants find their way into vital water resources. Contaminated water does not affect just drinking water but also has adverse effect on crops and marine life. The good news is water pollution can be avoided, if people wilfully regulate the way they use and dispose water while improving drainage systems.
Modern appliances including computers make use of chemicals known to cause soil pollution. The United Nations has suggested e-waste is likely to exceed 40 million tonnes per year. While e-waste is difficult to recycle, pollutants like chemicals must be properly disposed. It may not be cost-effective but is necessary.

Ocean Plastic Hazards

A recent study appearing in National Geographic indicates plastic bags have been found in the Arctic zone buried deep under the ice. If garbage management does not improve, an estimated 155 million tonnes of plastic will be dumped into the ocean by coastal countries by the year 2025.
Recycling plastic has turned into a streamlined process for disposal units using scientific means to collect and manage garbage. Technology comes to the aid of innovative garbage management professionals keen on reversing ill-effects of environmental pollution through plastic.
Several other areas have been identified wherein pollution control can keep pace with industrialisation. Recycling of plastic and paper is widely accepted, while recycling of wood and glass is considered an environmentally friendly exercise.
Dependence on technology must be acknowledged, especially if modern gadgets cannot be made without the help of chemicals and plastics capable of causing untold damage to the environment. It is now possible to convert waste into energy and electricity. Pollution control is better understood now than ever before. Collective effort must be made to curb all forms of pollution and improve the environment.

5 Global Warming Facts

  • According to IPCC 2007 report, sea level will rise by 7-23 inches by the end of this century due to global warming
  • Global warming that is causing extreme weather changes has shown it implications in the way of forest fires, heat waves and severe tropical storms throughout the world
  • 2000-2009 has been the hottest decade periods of the earth
  • Since the industrial revolution in 1700, the level of carbon dioxide on earth has increased by 34%.
  • The NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) proposed the Clean Air Act to cut power plant emissions by 26%  in the next 7 years
